Contention Ratio Overview

Precision Connect services are available with different contention ratios. Contention ratios relate to the levels of shared bandwidth between DSL users on the same telephone exchange and the Precision Connect network and then our internet backhaul for internet services.

Lower contention ratios result in lower latency between your computer system and our core network resulting in higher performance.

Our Contention Ratios

When selecting a DSL service with Precision Connect please consider the use of the service when deciding on a contention ratio as it may directly impact the performance of your system. Below is a table detailing our contention ratios and their expected usage.

Contention Ratio
Recommended Usage
Corporate Grade 1:1
Guaranteed bandwidth between locations. Used normally when business critical applications use WAN connectivity. Remote database access, SAN and storage replication, etc.
Server Grade 4:1
When business services are used across the WAN. For example Microsoft Terminal Services / Citrix, DFS and Microsoft Exchange.
Office Grade 20:1
Office locations where users are not reliant upon WAN connectivity. Great for when there are local servers at each site. Recommended also for Business Internet services.
Residential Grade 50:1
Small branch office locations with very few staff. Suited to basic services including EFTPOS, email and web traffic.
